JS McColl Painting Contractors Ltd - About Us
PROFESSIONALISM |WORKING PRACTICES | WORKFORCE | OUR CLIENTS | WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAID | OUR CLIENT SERVICES
Our Professionalism:
With dedication to our craft and an appreciation of client's unique requirements, difficulties and demands we flexibly incorporate them into our working practices.
To ensure client satisfaction, we work closely with them offering our expertise to advise on the most suitable paints for specific areas to give the best paint adhesion, taking into account previous coatings. We guarantee that thorough preparation is carried out in accordance with the appropriate technical specification. The correct paint is used and applied as per the manufacturer's specifications to ensure its durability and optimum life span. Where necessary, we also utilise our long standing, excellent partnering relationships with suppliers, for example ICI Paint, Dulux and Crown Paints, and their technical paint representatives. We have also been commended by our suppliers for the innovative and professional manner in which we use their products.
All of this ensures that the best suitability and long term durability of coating systems is achieved and gives a more cost effective solution in the long term as the paint finish lasts much longer and less preparation is required next time.
Working Practices:
We have a highly-experienced management team with over 130 years experience in the
painting and decorating trade. Headed up by managing director, Ronnie McColl and assisted by
contracts manager, Justin McColl the company is structured to ensure that all contracts are allocated
a foreman supervisor (known as a chargehand). For contracts of a significant size, this supervisory role is a
full-time one. Supervisors are involved in the continuous supervision of ongoing work and assessment of completed work.
Designated supervisors - all of whom have been with the company for between 10 and 23 years - make themselves available
for regular client communication.
Managing director, Ronnie McColl and contracts manager, Justin McColl are involved in personally overseeing all major contract
work, making site visits every few days to communicate with staff and chargehands to ensure that contracts are delivered to the
highest quality of workmanship with the minimum of inconvenience to the client. These on-site meetings also allow us to quickly
and effectively deal with any issues of quality, progress, site problems or health and safety matters. Progress meetings involving client,
surveyor, supplier and contractor are held at regular intervals or when requested. This focus on client communication helps
to ensure that all contract deadlines are effectively met. We have devised a quality control questionnaire which is completed
weekly as a result of regular site visits to assess quality of workmanship and safe methods of working.
We have a close working relationship with all our major materials suppliers including their specification and technical teams.
We regularly work with our supply chain to provide our customers with technical advice, bespoke specification and colour consultancy.
Workforce:
All contract work is delivered by over thirty directly employed operatives who have an average length of service with the company
of approximately twenty years. In itself, this statistic is one that any company would be proud of, however, in our industry, this is
remarkable. All painters are fully qualified tradesmen and all are fully conversant with the appropriate Health & Safety regulations.
The company does not employ semi-skilled or self-employed personnel.
All personnel are provided with in-house training and supplied with the best equipment and materials. The company has an in-house
agreement with personnel over flexibility of hours of work and provides flexible rates of pay and conditions that are in accordance
with the Scottish Decorators Federation's rules and regulations. An internal bonus scheme is linked to the completion of contract work
within the timeframes agreed with the client.
We employ apprentices annually and train them the 'J.S. McColl Way' while they undertake formal training at CITB colleges with a view to permanent employment with this company when their apprenticeship is complete. All apprentices work directly under the supervision of long-serving tradesmen.
The company still employs a number of personnel who completed their apprenticeship with J S McColl 20 years ago. Team working is also a critical factor in the
successful delivery of contract work, with the team's skill and knowledge informing the initial works plan and ensuring that all contracts are delivered to the highest quality standards.
